Antigua and Barbuda Citizenship by Investment in 2026: The Complete Guide

Antigua and Barbuda is a two-island state in the Eastern Caribbean, and its Citizenship by Investment Programme has run since 2013. I usually describe it to families as a second citizenship that does not ask you to move: there is no residence permit first and no years of waiting for naturalisation. What it does ask for is an investment, a clean background that survives strict checks, and a short stay in the country after you become a citizen.
Below is the whole picture in one place. The detailed parts are in separate guides on costs, the application and documents, the family, the passport and travel and the comparison with other Caribbean programmes.
Who can apply
The Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU) sets the basics: the main applicant must be over 18, meet the application requirements and choose one of the investment options. Applications are filed only through an agent licensed by the CIU, so you cannot send a file to the government yourself.
Two points come before any calculation:
- Nationality. According to BRIDGES, applications from citizens of Russia and Belarus have not been accepted since 31 March 2023. This is the first thing I check for every family I speak to.
- Background. The CIU lists grounds that rule an applicant out, including a criminal conviction, being the subject of a criminal investigation and being a potential security risk. Giving false information is also a reason to lose citizenship later.
The four investment options
The CIU lists four routes. The amounts below are the official minimums. Fees come on top.
| Option | Minimum | What happens to the money |
|---|---|---|
| National Development Fund (NDF) | $230,000 | A non-refundable contribution |
| University of the West Indies Fund (UWI) | $260,000, families of six or more, processing fees for six included | A non-refundable contribution |
| Approved real estate | $300,000 | You own the property, held for at least 5 years |
| Approved business | $1,500,000 alone, or a joint investment of at least $5,000,000 with at least $400,000 from each investor | A business investment |
The current thresholds have applied since 1 August 2024, when the NDF contribution was raised to $230,000. A useful detail: under the NDF option the contribution is the same for a single applicant and for a family of up to four. What grows with the family is the fees. I explain the full budget in the guide on costs and fees.
Which option families usually choose
BRIDGES calls the NDF the most straightforward route and the UWI fund the option designed for large families. Real estate suits people who want to keep an asset, accepting that it must be held for five years and that the sale price later is set by the market. The business route is used far less often.
What the family can include
The programme is known for its wide definition of family. Depending on the conditions, one application can include a spouse, children, financially dependent parents and grandparents aged 55 and over, and in some cases brothers and sisters. Children aged 12 and over go through due diligence, and from 16 they take part in the interview. The rules for each category are in my family guide.
How the process works
In short: a preliminary check of the family, the choice of option, the documents, filing through a licensed agent, due diligence and the interview, approval, the investment, the oath of allegiance and the passports. The CIU asks for the full due diligence fees and 10% of the government processing fee when you file. The balance, the passport fees and the investment are paid after the approval letter, and the contribution must be made within 30 days.
Since 15 December 2023 every applicant and every family member aged 16 and over takes a remote interview, and the fee is $1,500 per application. The CIU does not publish a standard processing time, and I do not promise a date to any family. Step by step details are in the guide on the application and documents.

The rules after you become a citizen
- Presence. The CIU site says a citizen may lose citizenship if they do not spend at least 5 days in the country in the first five calendar years. On 14 July 2026 a bill raising this to 30 days was tabled in parliament, and the prime minister said the 30 days are already applied administratively. BRIDGES plans every case around 30 days.
- The passport. It is valid for 5 years. Renewal depends on meeting the presence requirement.
- No annual renewal of status. Citizenship itself is not renewed every year the way a residence permit is.
- Voting. The CIU notes that the passport does not give automatic voting rights.
What the passport gives and what it does not
Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda can make short trips to the Schengen area without a visa under the EU agreement, and they need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) for the United Kingdom. In 2026 the European Commission set 1 June 2028 as the date by which the Caribbean investment citizenship programmes should be wound down, otherwise the visa waiver may be suspended. As of October 2026 the waiver is in force. I cover this in the guide on the passport and travel.
Antigua and Barbuda permits dual citizenship. BRIDGES also notes that the country has no personal income tax, but citizenship does not change your tax residence on its own. Your tax position depends on where you actually live and on the law of that country.
Is it the right programme for you?
When I look at Antigua for a family, I check three things first: whether their passports allow them to apply at all, how many people go into the application, and whether they are ready to spend 30 days on the islands over five years. If those answers fit, the programme is one of the most family-friendly in the Caribbean. The BRIDGES page on Antigua and Barbuda citizenship has its own calculator and FAQ. Questions and answers
Do I have to live in Antigua and Barbuda?
No. You do not need a residence permit before applying and you do not have to move. After citizenship is granted there is a presence rule for the first five years. The official CIU site still states 5 days, but a bill raising it to 30 days was tabled in July 2026 and, according to the prime minister, 30 days are already applied in practice. Plan for 30 days.
Can Russian citizens apply?
No. BRIDGES reports that since 31 March 2023 the programme has not accepted applications from citizens of Russia and Belarus. A family with another citizenship should check its own eligibility in writing before collecting documents.
Can I keep my current passport?
Antigua and Barbuda allows dual citizenship. Whether you can keep your current citizenship depends on the law of the country that issued it, so check that separately.
